Horsebridge Open: The Space Within

Horsebridge Open: The Space Within

Gallery 1 & 2

12 - 27 January
In 2018, the Horsebridge invited artists to submit work that would feature in our annual Open Exhibition ‘The Space Within’ launching our visual arts programme for 2019.
The aim of this thematic Open exhibition is to bring together artists of all levels who explore the role of art in contemporary society and work in engaging, playful, thought-provoking ways.

The Space Within was inspired by British artists Rachael Whiteread and Phylida Barlow. Both Whiteread and Barlow work with sculptural form using everyday materials to produce works that dominate and change the architectural sense of the space that they fill.
Artists were asked to consider:
Positive and negative space, domestic objects, memory, architectural space and form, balance, rhythm, materiality, mass, volume, materials, permanence, transition and dictating & challenging the experience of viewing.

The exhibition of selected works features a wide range of mediums from artists who responded to the brief, including sculpture, 2D wall hung pieces, Fine Art light work and site specific installation, curated throughout both of our ground floor galleries.

A panel will award The Horsebridge New Ambitions Prize to the artist that they judge to have responded most creatively to the brief and there is also opportunity to vote for the piece you personally find most engaging. The artist with the most public votes on 25 January will receive the People’s Choice Award.

All cash prizes are kindly sponsored by Spacemaker Architects.
